Cooperation Unit „Mechanisms of Leukemogenesis“

„...In an novel mode of cooperation, the University Hospital of Ulm and the DKFZ have agreed to support a cooperation unit that aims to elucidate mechanisms of leukemogenesis. This unit profits from the extensive clinical expertise present in the clinic of Internal Medicine III of the University Hospital of Ulm and cutting-edge science performed in the Department of Molecular Genetics in the DKFZ. The unit can use leukemia banks that are among the largest in Germany and has direct access to patients of the biggest clinical studies conducted on B-CLL in Germany. At the same time, it is part of the DKFZ with its outstanding infrastructure and scientific resources. The cooperation unit is led by Daniel Mertens and supported and mentored by Professors Hartmut Döhner, Stephan Stilgenbauer and Peter Lichter. It is an optimal platform for front-line research and has the potential to significantly advance our knowledge of the mechanisms of leukemogenesis....“

Organization of the Cooperation Unit

The cooperation unit consists of two groups, one based at the University Hospital in Ulm and one based in the DKFZ in Heidelberg. Daniel Mertens is with his Max-Eder-Group in Ulm during most of the time and spends one day every week in Heidelberg to supervise his colleagues in the Junior Group „Mechanisms of Leukemogenesis“.
