Application Procedure and Documents

Candidates for the summer school will be selected by the hosts, course leaders and the local organizing team, based on the following application documents:

  1. Tabular CV in English (including publications, conference contributions (e.g. talks or posters), awards, scholarships etc. if appropriate) as one PDF
  2. University Degree/s as one PDF (in German, English, French or Spanish)
  3. Current certificate of enrolment from your university (in German, English, French or Spanish) as one PDF (if applicable)
  4. Motivation Letter in English as one PDF (max. 1 DIN A4 page) with your own signature
  5. Recommendation Letter in English as one PDF (max. 1 DIN A4 page) including business affiliation and signature of the issuing person

Selection criteria

The application documents will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Link between candidate and topics of the summer school, based on motivation and recommendation letter
  • Conference contributions, scholarships, awards and publications are considered a plus.

Please note: All documents have to be submitted as PDF. We don't accept motivation letters, recommendation letters or tabular CV submitted as Word-Doc. These applications will be immediatelly rejected!

Further hints

  • Certificate of enrolment: this document is an official document from your university that applies to the current academic year/session and confirms that you are officially enrolled as a student at this institution now
  • Your own motivation letter: the motivation letter should be addressed to the course leaders of the summer school. Please clearly explain why you should be accepted and why you would benefit from the course. Therefore, please link the contents of the summer school to your own background and future plans. General motivation letters (e.g. for job positions) won't be accepted.
Please note: The summer school is designed for young scientists (usually younger than 30 years old) and not for experienced researchers. If you are e.g. older than 30 years and you are still studying or if you already have a PhD degree and consider yourself as "young researcher", please clearly explain in your motivation letter why you consider yourself as a "young scientist" and why you should be accepted.
  • The recommendation letters: the recommendation letter should be addressed to the course leaders of the summer school and it should be written on the official layout/design of the person's institute. Furthermore, the affiliation and the contact details of the writing person must be clearly indicated on the letter as well as the signature (either manually or digitally). In the recommendation letter, the writing person (e.g. your professor or boss) should explain why you fit as a candidate for the summer school. A general recommendation letter without any link to the summer school won't be accepted.

Abstracts for Science Slam and Poster Session

Applicants can decide if they would like to participate in the Science Slam and in the Poster Session to present their own current research projects, which have a link to the topic of the summer school. Topics with a wider outlook than the summer school would be greatly appreciated too. Feel free to contact the local organizing team if you are unsure whether your research project can be accepted.

If you want to submit an abstract, please upload your abstract while you apply, during the application period until the application deadline! So, prepare your abstract and submit it during your online application. Abstract submissions after application will not be accepted.

Participation in the science slam or poster session is optional; you can also apply for the summer school without participating in the science slam or poster session.

After reviewing all abstracts, the hosts, course leaders and the local coordinating team will finally assign abstracts for the science slam and the poster session.

Please carefully download and read our abstract guideline below.
