Julian W. Maerz has a background in medicine as well as in comparative and economic law and does research at the intersection of health economics, medical ethics, and international and comparative health law. He studies the ethical rationale of the economic evaluation in healthcare as well as the principles for economic evaluation in healthcare drawn from medical ethics, international and European human rights law, and national health laws. Furthermore, he examines the legal framework governing resource allocation and the rationing of medical resources in the German, French, English and Swiss healthcare systems, as well as the role of health economics and medical ethics in this context.

Julian studied law at SciencesPo Paris and at the Universities of Oxford and Munich and holds a Master's degree in economic law with distinction from SciencesPo Paris. He submitted a doctoral thesis in law in February 2020 and is currently a doctoral candidate in medicine (expected to be completed in 2022).
