Prof. Dr. Barbara Burwinkel
Head and Full Professor, Molecular Biology of Breast Cancer, University Womens Clinic, University Heidelberg
Head, Molecular Epidemiology Unit, German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg
Barbara Burwinkel is head of the Division “Molecular Biology of Breast Cancer” at the Department Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University Heidelberg and head of the Molecular Epidemiology Unit at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). She holds a Diploma degree and PhD in Human Biology/Theoretical Medicine and a Habilitation in Molecular Genetics. She has been elected as Helmholtz-University Group leader “Molecular Epidemiology” in 2006 (DKFZ/University Heidelberg) and appointed as professor to the University Heidelberg in 2008. Her professorship has an important bridging function between the University Clinic Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center. Her actual research topics are the identification of genetic and molecular risk factors of breast and colorectal cancer; the detection and molecular characterization of early detection and prognostic /predictive markers in breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer (such as miRNAs, somatic mutations, methylation signatures, metabolites). Barbara Burwinkel is author of more than 120 research publications. She is member of the BCAC consortium, an international forum of investigators interested in the inherited risk of breast cancer and the EACR (European Association of Cancer Research) and several other research organizations.
