pH is a valuable biomarker for cancer as it is known to be increased in tumors. In 2020, we developed a novel method for non-invasive mapping of pH in tumor-bearing mice using protein CEST-MRI. Now, we are aiming at the further development of this technique to optimize the detectable range of pH values for monitoring of treatment response, as well as, to compensate respiratory motion artifacts.

The candidate (Master or Bachelor thesis) will conduct experiments on a 9.4T small animal MRI scanner. Prior to in vivo examinations in mice, model systems will be prepared in a bio-chemical laboratory. The scope of work will be adjusted to the individual time frame of the candidate. Evaluation of MRI data will be performed in Matlab. Knowledge about MRI physics and programming experience is a plus.

A non-invasive alternative for X-ray mammography would allow more regular screenings, and thus, would contribute to a reduced mortality of breast cancer. Besides Diffusion-weighted MRI, in particular CEST-MRI holds a great potential, as it allows obtaining biochemical information on the molecular level. In 2020, we developed a novel method to correct interferences form fat tissue in CEST-MRI and demonstrated the potential for the diagnosis of breast cancer in a pilot study at 7T. Now, we are aiming at the translation of this technique to a clinical magnetic field strength of 3T to enable a broader application and the investigation of larger patient cohorts.

The candidate (Master or Bachelor thesis) will conduct experiments on a 3T clinical MRI scanner. Prior to in vivo examinations of volunteers, model systems will be prepared in a bio-chemical laboratory. The scope of work will be adjusted to the individual time frame of the candidate. Evaluation of MRI data will be performed in Matlab. Knowledge about MRI physics and programming experience is a plus.
