Lena Maier-Hein is a Full Professor at Heidelberg University (Germany) and Managing Director of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. At the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), she heads the Division of Intelligent Medical Systems (IMSY) and serves as Managing Director of the cross-program initiative “Data Science and Digital Oncology.” She is furthermore an affiliated professor at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). Her research focuses on Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence (AI), with particular emphasis on surgical data science, novel AI-enabled imaging technologies, and the trustworthy validation of medical AI.
Lena Maier-Hein is a Fellow of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) Society. She serves as Chair of the international Surgical Data Science initiative and President of the MICCAI Special Interest Group on Challenges. Her scientific achievements have been recognized through numerous awards, including the 2013 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the 2017/18 Berlin-Brandenburg Academy Prize, the 2024 Baden-Württemberg State Research Award, and the 2024 German Cancer Award. She has received both a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant (2015–2020) and an ERC Consolidator Grant (2021–2026).
