ESTHER

The aim of the ESTHER study is to improve the prevention, early detection and treatment of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The statistical distribution of the frequency of these diseases allows conclusions to be drawn about possible causes and risk factors. In future, this will help to detect or even prevent such diseases at an earlier stage.

Between 2000 and 2002, 9,940 women and men aged between 50 and 74 were included in the ESTHER study during a health check-up by their family doctor. The participants completed the ESTHER study health questionnaire for the first time and provided information on their state of health.

After 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20 and 23 years, the participants were contacted again and asked to complete another health questionnaire. In addition, since the 8-year follow-up, the study participants' general practitioners were also included and completed health questionnaires. Health data was collected on 9,356, 8,270, 7,011, 5,611, 4,639, 4,165, 3,659 and 2,027 study participants at each of the first eight follow-up points.

The follow-up assessment is currently taking place 26 years after the start of the study. The participation of the study participants continues to be exemplary and we expect to be able to collect health data again on around 1,500 study participants who are still alive and are now between 76 and 100 years old. The ESTHER study participants will be followed up for a total of 30 years.

In the follow-up assessments after 8, 11 and 14 years, in addition to the health questionnaire, the participants were offered a 2-3 hour comprehensive examination (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, hand grip strength and body weight measurement) and questioning by our trained ESTHER study doctors during a home visit. At each of the three time points, 3,124, 2,761 and 2,350 study participants took part in the home visits.

Answer: As a participant in the ESTHER study, you will be contacted again approximately every 3 years by our study secretariat in Saarbrücken and asked for information about your current state of health by means of a questionnaire.

Question: When will I receive the results of ESTHER?

Answer: The data collected by ESTHER is evaluated completely anonymously. This also applies to the blood, urine and stool samples. For this reason, it is not possible to assign and communicate results to individual study participants. However, the results of the ESTHER study will lead to proposals for further improvements in the prevention, early detection and treatment of chronic diseases, which will benefit everyone in the future.

Question: Can I still participate in the ESTHER Study?

Answer: No. New enrollment in the ESTHER Study was only possible until July 31, 2002. However, you can go to your doctor at any time for the screening examinations, regardless of your participation in ESTHER.
