The Department of Radiology (E010) at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) offers physicians a wide range of opportunities to participate in innovative research projects, develop their own ideas, and actively shape the future of oncological imaging. A dynamic clinical-scientific environment, high-performing interdisciplinary teams, and the close integration of cancer research and patient care create the ideal conditions for this. Our research focuses on comprehensive oncological imaging using ultrasound, MRI (from low-field to 7-Tesla), photon-counting CT, and PET/MR. Our work centers on the methodological advancement of modern imaging techniques as well as the early detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of a wide variety of tumor diseases. This enables new techniques to be applied clinically, scientifically investigated, and further developed.

In a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment, we combine complex scientific questions with basic research and clinical application. Close collaboration with experts in MR and CT physics, computer science, image processing, and data science enables research projects at the intersection of clinical radiology, medical technology, and computer-aided image analysis. The spectrum ranges from new acquisition and reconstruction methods to quantitative imaging and AI-based methods. In this way, we develop innovative imaging methods so that we can specifically apply these new findings to the care of our patients.

In addition, the DKFZ’s Clinician Scientist Program offers structured career paths for physicians engaged in research, including dedicated research time, mentoring, and opportunities for advanced scientific training.

Radiology Residency

The DKFZ offers physicians the opportunity to closely integrate clinical training with scientific work. The department chair, Prof. Dr. med. Dipl.-Phys. Heinz-Peter Schlemmer, holds authorization to supervise a 40-month residency program in the specialty of radiology. In collaboration with the Departments of Radiology and Neuroradiology at Heidelberg University Hospital and the Thorax Clinic Heidelberg, the full 60-month training authorization is available. Our training program combines structured clinical training with specialized insights into modern oncological imaging and translational cancer research.

Our program focuses on:

• structured orientation and ongoing specialist supervision
• comprehensive oncological imaging using MRI, CT, ultrasound, PET/MR, and PET/CT
• Diagnosis and monitoring of a wide variety of tumor diseases
• regular case conferences and journal clubs
• weekly continuing education sessions and scientific lectures with external speakers
• Interdisciplinary collaboration with clinical and research partners
• Insights into and participation in clinical trials and translational research projects
• Personal training and development discussions

Through close collaboration with Heidelberg University Hospital, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), and various research groups at the DKFZ, our physicians work in an interdisciplinary environment that closely integrates clinical radiology and oncological research.
