Sina Mareike Schmitt

Ph.D Student

Sina is part of the core team behind MEDAL, a large-scale initiative that aims to redirect medical imaging AI research toward the areas with the greatest potential to improve care. Her research focuses on designing a clinically grounded benchmark, from creating a taxonomy of high-impact clinical questions to developing statistical methods for AI evaluation across tasks. She collaborates with an international consortium of experts in machine learning, medicine, global health, and ethics.

Sina is a doctoral candidate in the ELLIS PhD program, supervised by Lena Maier-Hein and Gaël Varoquaux, with additional mentorship from Bob Williamson. She holds a Master's degree in Machine Learning from the University of Tübingen and Bachelor's degrees in Informatics as well as in Science – Media – Communication from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
