Dr. Patrick Godau

Group lead

Dr. Patrick Godau is a Postdoctoral Researcher and leader of the “Intelligent Systems in Surgery and Endoscopy” subgroup within the division. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics (2015) and Computer Science (2018), and a Master’s in Mathematics (2019) from Heidelberg University, with specialization in theoretical computer science and algorithmic complexity.

Dr. Godau received his Ph.D. degree in 2025 for his contributions on developing robust deep learning systems for computer vision in healthcare, with particular focus on transfer learning, meta learning, and model validation for real-world deployment.

His research has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the "MedIA MICCAI 2023 Best Paper Award", and he has won multiple international computer vision competitions. Emphasizing good scientific practice and reproducibility, he open-sourced the "Medical Meta Learner" Python package, a highly modular workflow manager for deep learning. Currently, he leads the development of Surgical Foundation Models and enjoys mentoring Ph.D. and Master’s students.
