Double-label immunofluorescence microscopy on a phase contrast background demonstrates the existence of two compositionally very different kinds of adherens junctions in a cross-section through an excurrrent duct epithelium of rat testis, the apical zonula adhaerens containing both plaque proteins, β-catenin (green) and protein myozap (red), resulting in yellow merger colour. By contrast, the lateral punctate or fascia-like adherens junctions contain only the β-catenin. M, mesenchymal cells; S, aggregate of spermatozoa.
