Helmholtz-Israel-Cooperation in Personalized Medicine

Based on a long tradition of scientific cooperation between Germany and Israel, the Helmholtz Centers in the research field of “Health” which include the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch (MDC), the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and the Helmholtz Center Munich / German Research Center for Environmental Health (HMGU), wish to establish a novel partnership in the emerging area of personalized medicine. A major goal for all participating institutions is to unravel causes and mechanisms of major widespread diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, infectious or environmentally related diseases. Despite remarkable progress in understanding the molecular etiology of the different pathologies, in many fields efficient therapeutic strategies based on these findings are still lacking. Developing new paradigms for personalized medicine is among the major challenges. The goal of this program is to generate a significant impact in developing strategies for personalized approaches for diagnosis, treatment and prevention based on patient stratification

The joint activities will complement competencies and state-of-the-art technologies of participating institutions and will intensify existing synergies and inspire innovative research in the emerging field of personalized medicine.

A key element of this bi-national program are joint research projects, proposed by tandems of collaborating scientists, one from each country. Eligible for grant support are project proposals with the potential to improve medical care and treatment by generating a detailed understanding of the genetics and molecular biology of a given disease, with the long-term goal to develop biomarkers and novel approaches for personalized diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Within this recently established initiative we offer a short-term exchange program to promote collaborative research between scientists of both countries in the field of personalized medicine. The visits may last between one week and one month.
