We are looking for a creative, ambitious, and collaborative early-career researcher to establish an independent junior research group (https://www.dkfz.de/en/research) to pursue cutting-edge questions in any of our research topics: Cell and Tumor Biology; Functional and Structural Genomics; Epidemiology, Public Health, Prevention and Survivorship; Immunology, Infection & Cancer; and Imaging and Radiology. We are looking for an IT Security Specialist to define security standards for two major data infrastructure projects in the Heidelberg-Mannheim region: (1) The Data Space Project of the Health + Life Science Alliance has recently been launched to develop a trusted research environment (TRE) for seven leading life sciences and biomedical research institutions in the Heidelberg-Mannheim region. (2) The German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA) is part of the national program for research data infrastructures (NFDI) and has established a secure national omics data infrastructure, enabling the secondary use of human omics data in research. These infrastructures are supporting the bioinformatics community with software tools for secure data/metadata storage, interactive data portals with data visualization, and streamlined data deposition and acquisition solutions. Job description:

We are looking for a team member with substantial experience in information security and risk governance. Your role will be instrumental in technical and organizational decision-making for the Data Space and GHGA projects and will ensure compliance with modern standards for both infrastructures. You will be part of two tightly connected teams spanning cloud engineers, data stewards and interdisciplinary researchers with the joint mission of enabling the secure sharing of sensitive biomedical data for the scientific research community. Professorship (W3) in Clinical Computational Cancer Biology (f/m/d)

The chair will be newly established at the NCT West, Campus Cologne (https://nct.dkfz.de/standorte/nct-west.html). The NCT is a long-term collaboration between the DKFZ, excellent partners in university medicine, and other outstanding research partners at various locations in Germany. The primary mission of the NCT is to design, prepare, and conduct innovative investigator-initiated clinical trials (IITs) that aim to significantly improve the outcome and quality of life of cancer patients.

YOUR TASKS

Within the framework of this professorship (unlimited private-law employment relationship), you will lead a DKFZ research division within the NCT. You will analyze comprehensive, high-quality datasets and develop algorithms for the NCT-IIT program. In particular, machine learning methods should be developed to better understand inter- and intra-tumoral heterogeneity and evolution, chromosomally unstable tumors, as well as for risk stratification and early detection. Furthermore, the professorship will play a leading role in establishing suitable datasets in the NCT/SUDO databases to monitor parameters of clinical trials. Additionally, key elements for big- and deep-data analyses from clinical trials and tumor tissue samples databases will be provided. The program will be integrated into the DKFZ Data Science Faculty to enable complex genomic analyses in primary tumors and metastases and to address challenges, such as divergent responses or resistant phenotypes through adaptive study design. YOUR PROFILE

The future post holder should be an internationally recognized personality in the field of computational cancer biology. Excellent scientific qualifications, proved experience in the analysis of oncological data, particularly in a clinical context, excellent publication record, and a high level of competence in acquiring third-party funding are expected. Medical imaging AI is advancing rapidly, however, research effort is often shaped by data availability rather than clinical need. MEDAL (Medical Imaging AGI's Last Exam - https://www.carl-zeiss-stiftung.de/en/project-overview/detail/medical-imaging-agis-last-exam) is an international initiative funded by the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung that aims to change this by building a globally relevant benchmark grounded in real clinical priorities. Through a large-scale crowdsourcing campaign, clinicians, and researchers worldwide will contribute challenging clinical questions and medical imaging data. An international, multidisciplinary expert panel will curate the benchmark to ensure clinical relevance, diversity, and rigor.

Role and responsibilities:

We are looking for a Scientific Solution Architect to design and build the technical foundations of the MEDAL platform. This is a technically demanding role with real architectural ownership: you will shape how clinical data flows into the project, how it is stored and protected, and how AI models are evaluated against the benchmark, and you will be hands-on in implementing these systems alongside a software developer.
You will work closely with researchers, clinicians, legal and ethics experts, and a dedicated software developer.

Key responsibilities include:

The Young Investigator Group will complement DKFZ’s image analysis and AI methodology activities by focusing on data-centric AI and robust machine learning for imaging across domains, with applications spanning biomedical imaging and other imaging-intensive fields represented within the Helmholtz Association.

The group’s methodological focus will be on developing algorithms and frameworks that ensure stable and predictable model behavior under real-world variability and perturbations, such as changes in acquisition devices, experimental setups, environmental conditions, domains and populations, as well as noise characteristics and artifacts. Robustness is understood as a key building block toward trustworthy deployment of AI systems in high-stakes scientific, industrial. and biomedical applications.

Potential research topics include:

robustness to distribution shifts, domain adaptation, and domain generalization
out-of-distribution detection and modeling
uncertainty estimation
innovative data curation approaches
learning under label noise and weak supervision

The group leader is expected to actively collaborate with HI support and scientific teams at DKFZ, DESY, UFZ and MDC, contributing to Helmholtz Imaging support activities, including direct interaction with Helmholtz researchers as well as the dissemination and reuse of HI solutions across the Helmholtz Association. The role includes contributions to training, knowledge transfer and education (e.g., seminars, lecture series, summer schools, workshops, and supervision of students and early-career researchers), as well as national and international representation of Helmholtz Imaging and DKFZ. In addition, the group leader is expected to contribute, together with other HI teams at DKFZ, to strategic initiatives and to the continuous shaping of the HI mission.
