The Ensembl genome browsers provide access to genes and genomes. It's rich in features and capabilities, and popular throughout the community. The course focuses on browsing Ensembl chordates (mainly human and mouse) with other examples from the species found at www.ensemblgenomes.org (eg. bacteria and plants)
Specifically, the day will include hands-on sessions, and cover:
The use of www.ensembl.org to explore genes and genomes
BioMart (quick data-mining tool)
Variations in Ensembl (CNVs, SNPs, insertions, deletions, and associated information such as phenotypes, population frequencies, etc)
Comparative genomics (comparing genes and genomes across species)
Regulation (regions of gene regulation based on ENCODE data).
