Division of Genetics of Skin Carcinogenesis

Prof. Dr. Petra Boukamp

Skin tumors are the most frequent type of cancer worldwide. Yet, little is known about their genetic causes. Our aim is to identify genetic changes that play a role in the development and progression of skin tumors. For this research we have developed a special cell culture model system representing various stages of skin carcinogenesis. In addition, we are using cell lines isolated from skin tumors. Another focus of interest is the regulation and function of an enzyme called telomerase whose activity is crucial for a tumor cell’s ability to divide indefinitely. Understanding the underlying genetic causes will lay the groundwork for improved prevention and treatment options.
