SBCancer Submodule I: Cell-context specific cellular decisions

Overview of PI3 Kinase and SMAD signalling

The goal of SBCancer submodule I is to examine general principles determining the cell-context specific activation of the PI3 kinase signalling pathway and cell-context specific decisions in response to SMAD signalling. These pathways influence e.g. the decisions between cell cycle arrest versus proliferation.

As a paradigm to understand mechanisms facilitating signal integration we will examine cross-talk of the PI3 kinase and the SMAD signalling cascade. The stoichometry of pathway components will be identified by developing strategies for quantitative proteomics and mathematical models will be established based on quantitative time-resolved data. The models will be extended to include spatio-temporal effects based on data generated by live cell imaging. This will allow the study of general principles determining cellular decisions in glioma, hematopoetic and fibroblast cells.
