Our goal as a leading academic radiology center is to refine radiological methods of integrated tumor imaging and offer these to patients within the framework of institutions, including the National Center of Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg. An important task is the early detection of tumors and determining their stage. Alongside tumor morphology, we are investigating functional parameters of the tumor tissue such as blood supply, cell metabolism, and molecular mechanisms. This knowledge enables us to better assess the individual cancer and to choose and plan for therapy. We also use these techniques to predict the disease course and evaluate treatment results. A new research objective is the prevention of tumors in a non-symptomatic stage in individuals with an increased risk. Early detection specifically includes diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs, as well as cardiovascular and brain diseases. In addition to clinically oriented projects we conduct experimental and preclinical studies in collaboration with basic research groups at the Center.
