Exercise and Cancer

© dkfz.de

From a scientific perspective the Division focuses on the effects of nutrition, inflammation, DNA damage and energy balance on cancer risk and prognosis. Energy balance encompasses body composition, adiposity and, perhaps most importantly, physical activity and exercise. The impact of these factors on cancer risk is well established. Yet exercise appears to have an even stronger influence on quality of life and prognosis among cancer patients. The Division of Preventive Oncology includes the Group “Exercise and Cancer” (Drs. Wiskemann and Krakowski-Roosen), which leads several randomized controlled trials to determine the potential of exercise on reducing negative side-effects of treatment and improving cancer outcomes.
