Research Projects of the Division of Medical and Biological Informatics
Telemedicine / Teleradiology
A prerequisite for processing medical images for aiding in prevention, diagnosis and therapy is for images to be communicated between the specialist departments of a clinic and health system institutions.
To accomplish this, communication among specialist departments and organizations needs to be integrated into clinical workflows and into the information systems these utilize.
This requires methods and tools that are not yet generally available and hardly standardized. For this reason we are conducting research in the area of telemedicine with a focus on teleradiology.
Areas
By way of example, our research activities embrace the following areas:
- Evaluation of application scenarios
- Cooperative computer-assisted work efforts
- Point-to-point teleradiology
- Regional networks
- Web-based image distribution and cooperation
- Data protection and security
- Standardization of teleradiology
- Quality management in teleradiology
Standardization
The standardization of teleradiology is one of major concerns.
For this reason we are actively participating in the standardization bodies listed here.
We take a leading role in the Normungsausschuss Radiologie (NAR; Standardization Committee for Radiology ) of the Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft (German Radiology Society) and in the Deutsche Institut für Normung (DIN; German Institute for Standardization) towards developing a quality assurance standard for teleradiology.
Within the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Informationstechnologie (@GIT; Working Group for Information Technology) of the Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft (DRG) we are working on standardizing DICOM e-mail.
Technology Transfer
We work together with other research institutions as well as with the industry. Technology transfer is an important aspect in these efforts.
