On March 22nd 2007 Tobias Heimann and his co-authors from the Department Medical and Biological Informatics (Head Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Meinzer) received the 1st price for the best presentation at the symposium "Bildverarbeitung in der Medizin" (Image Processing in Medicine) in Munich, Germay, for the paper "Freiheit für Formmodelle!" (Freedom for form models!). The award is sponsored with 250 Euros.

Chicago, USA, Nov. 30, 2006: The Daily Bulletin of RSNA reported about Dr. Uwe Engelmanns presentation at RSNA 2006 in Chicago. RSNA is the world's largest radiology conference and exhibition.
Dr. Uwe Engelmann, senior research scientist at the Department Medical and Biological Informatics (Head Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Meinzer) at the German Cancer Research Center and one of the three founders and owners of the CHILI GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany, presented a paper about a teleradiology projekt in Greenland in the session "Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise".

DKFZ-Kunststoffherz steht erstmals Modell bei Herzoperation
Im Berliner Herzzentrum haben Chirurgen jetzt zum ersten Mal in der Therapieplanung und während einer Operation eines Patienten mit angeborenem Herzfehler das Kunststoffmodell seines Herzens eingesetzt. Die Technik zur Modellherstellung hat ein Team der Abteilung Medizinische und Biologische Informatik des Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrums (DKFZ) entwickelt. Die Wissenschaftler wollen dazu beitragen, dass sich die Zahl der Korrekturoperationen bei Herz-Patienten verringert und sich deren Lebensqualität verbessert.Weitere Infos

3D visualization of the interior of the body is changing medicine

The use of three-dimensional computer graphics in the visualization of the interior of the body is becoming an increasingly important aid for physicians. In the near future, radiation therapy will be applied to lung tumors from within, with a navigation system guiding a probe to the site. Mechanical waves provide brain surgeons with a tool for virtually “sounding out”, with the aid of a computer, suspicious tissue in the head so as to be able to assess tumors before operating.

December 2005: Quality Management System Approved
From 30 Nov. 2005 to 2 Dec. 2005, the Quality Management System of the working group Clinical Applications of the Division of Medical and Biological Informatics has been audited successfully on the basis of DIN EN ISO 13485:2003 and MDD 93/42/EEC Ax. II.3 by the company TÜV Product Service, Munich, Germany.
The auditor confirmed that the QM system is effective according to the investigated examples and that the described procedures are applied. The issue of the certificates based on the mentioned standards has been recommended.

Better treatment of pancreas cancer
Pancreas cancer is not only one of the most dangerous cancer diseases but the organ is also difficult to reach. Tumors could barely be removed up to now. However, surgeons in Heidelberg, Germany, could achieve a breakthrough: With new software that is able to display the organs in 3D it is not possible to cure the cancer but the surgical intervention becomes more precise.
