The cancer incidence rates (excluding skin cancer) in the Saarland are 279.9 for males and 198.1 for females. The cancer registry of the former GDR shows an incidence rate of 245.1 for males and 196.2 for females. Data from the Saarland cancer registry indicate that the incidence rates for both sexes rose until the mid-1980s and then stabilized without showing a definite upward or downward trend. By contrast, data from the cancer registry of the former GDR indicate a rising trend for both sexes since the early 1980s. It is estimated that 162 900 new cases of cancer occur annually in males, and that 173 200 new cases occur in females.
