Breast cancer

For breast cancer studies we are involved in the “European Prospective Investigation on Cancer (EPIC)”, the largest prospective cohort study on cancer worldwide, which involves ten European countries (http://epic.iarc.fr/), and in the “Breast and Prostate Cancer Cohort Consortium (BPC3)”, one of the largest study on breast and prostate cancers, which groups together cases and controls from the major international cohort studies, including EPIC (http://epi.grants.cancer.gov/BPC3/). Currently samples of over 8000 cases and 12000 controls are available in BPC3. Within BPC3 we genotype SNPs associated with cancer risk, emerging mostly from GWAS, with the aim of studying their possible interactions with established breast cancer risk factors. We have also been involved in a GWAS on estrogen receptor negative breast cancer, in the context of BPC3, which has yielded additional new susceptibility loci. We use knowledge on genetic and non-genetic risk factors to build multifactorial models for prediction of breast cancer risk. All studies on breast cancer are done in collaboration with the Division of Cancer Epidemiology.
