Studied biology, PhD thesis in biochemistry (1992), habilitation about high-thoughput methods at the University of Heidelberg (2003). In parallel to the group of Prof. Greg Winter, Dr. Breitling invented the technology of the recombinant antibodies, which he advanced in the group of Prof. Dr. M. Little at the DKFZ and in the group of Prof. Dr. E.K.F. Bautz at the University of Heidelberg. Almost all of his patents followed from this work have been licensed and resulted in the formation of Affimed (www.affimed.de).
From 1997-2004, as a member of the DKFZ division Molecular Genome Analysis (Prof. Dr. Annemarie Poustka), he started working on the combinatorial peptide synthesis by means of the solid amino acid particles. Coevally, he was occupied with the generation of human hybridoma libraries (see "Research Projects"). Sections of the latter project have been licensed to Abeome, while it is intendend to commercialize the new method of combinatorial peptide synthesis with the help of the PEPperPRINT Ltd., a DKFZ foundation beared by the members of this research group.
